Things you need to know when searching for your lost pet

Taking immediate action is crucial when you have lost a pet. The following are things you can do the moment you realize your pet is missing. Taking these steps will improve your changes of them returning home.

Immediate Steps to take
if you lose a pet

Call your local Animal Control. Time is very limited (usually 3 days) before an animal who is picked up by Animal Control is euthinezed.

  • Call your local Humane Society. Even though it's impossible for them to house every found pet, they often get calls from people who have found a pet!

  • Sign up on our Lost and Found Register
  • Register your lost pet on the following web sites. (These links will open a new page in your browser):

  • Create flyers and ask to post them at local veterinary offices, grocery stores, shopping areas, or school bulletin boards.

  • Ask all the regular delivery people in your area if they have seen your pet. Ask your mail carrier, newspaper delivery person or anyone you know who is around on a regular basis.

  • You can put an ad in the local newspapers describing the pet that you lost.

  • Look for your pet in abnormal or unused places around your house, lincluding outside storm draines or ditches.

Be sure to daily check the local shelters (Humane Society) and Burnhams Vetenary who houses animals picked up by Animal Control.
